Creating The Success You Want

If you love what you are doing and are making a comfortable living doing it, you’re a success. I know people who have worked in Building Services for decades and truly enjoy coming to work every day. They are able to provide for their family, and take great pride in what they do. They are a success. I also know people who work in Manhattan skyscrapers that make incredible amounts of money, but don’t have a life outside of work and just aren’t fulfilled with what they do. Despite the massive bank account and all the material possessions, they are not successful. Make no mistake: money does NOT equal success. Your happiness does.

My recipe for success is as follows:
Discover your passion.

Sit down, clear your mind of the day-to-day stresses and think: what makes me happy? Write down as many things as you can think of, even if you don’t know how they could possibly equate to a career. Take a look at the list and reflect on it.

Uncover your dream job.

Perhaps the answer popped up while you were doing step one. If not, that’s fine, too. Do some research on what types of careers would be a good fit. Maybe you jotted down “animals” and “helping others” and “the outdoors.” How about working at a wildlife rehabilitation center? Browse through sites like Indeed.com or CareerBuilder.com for what’s available in that field in your area. Is there NO place that does what you want to do? Or do you have an entrepreneurial spirit and want to strike off on your own and start a company?

Determine your bottom line expenses.

What is the lowest you could earn annually and maintain a comfortable standard of living? That doesn’t mean lattes every day and shopping sprees: it means what is the lowest you can survive on without having ramen noodles every night. The dream jobs most people want tend to either not pay a lot (working at an animal shelter, giving surfing lessons at the beach, landscape paintings for sale, etc), or they require expensive schooling to get there (veterinarian, CFO, doctor, etc). Other careers choices may demand monetary sacrifice while you start at the bottom as you prove your worth (actor, author, small business/startup owner, etc). Are your bottom line expenses less than what your dream job would pay? If not, do you have savings you can live off of for a time, or – as a last resort – have credit cards as an emergency backup?

Focus on your objective like a laser.

Work towards it like failure is NOT an option. Create a vision board filled with what you’d like to achieve and have. That job with animals? A Brooklyn brownstone? A trip to Paris? The newest, high-end camera gear? Find photos online that most closely resemble your dreams, print them out and keep them somewhere you’ll see them every day for the motivation you need.

Get the job/start the business.

You CAN do it. Since what we do for work is such a big part of who we are, this is a very large piece of the success puzzle. You’ll be happy and fulfilled with what you do every day, and will be proud to respond to the question, “So what do you do?”

Never lose sight of great relationships

Never lose sight of great relationships and cut loose those that drag you down. It’s as simple as that. It’s been said that you are the result of the 5 people you hang out with the most. Take a look at those who surround you and do an audit. Anyone need to go? This can be hard, but is necessary. Surround yourself with people who are a great influence and push you to be a better person.

Find time to do the things you enjoy.

Hike, bike, run, camp, watch movies, have long talks over coffee with friends. Life is once – enjoy every minute of it and you WILL be a success.
