Overcoming A Writer’s Block

Regardless of whether you are a newswriter, a reporter, a researcher or an author, you will face writer’s block at some point in your life and career. Coming face to face with a block in your creativity and imagination can frequently lead to procrastination, disappointment and the feeling of being stuck in one place. It is an inevitable occurrence for those whose methods of expressing revolve around words.

Go For A Walk

For thousands of years, philosophers, scientists, and famous writers have been known for taking regular walks that would ignite their inspiration and help them with a writer’s block. However, I am no philosopher or scientist, but I am a writer, and I can confirm that going for a walk works miracles for one’s mind. According to the Publication Coach article, going for a walk can instantly boost your creativity, because it is a simple and gentle exercise for your brain cells that helps them connect faster.

There are even studies that show a correlation between walking and creativity; around 95% of people who participated in these studies have shown an increase in creativity after only a 30-minute walk. No wonder the most successful and most creative people in our history have been hardcore walkers; from Aristotle, Beethoven and Dickens, to Nabokov, Nietzche and Wordsworth, all of them were faithful practitioners of the art of walking.

Tea And Background Music

The majority of writers like to work in complete silence, with a noise here and there. However, studies have shown that listening to low background music, sounds and even alpha waves can boost your creative output and improve your productivity. Background music can become ubiquitous as a creative setting for your writing, having the purpose of motivational and creative control. So, ‘good’ music is good for your writer’s block. On the other hand, so is a cup of ‘good’ tea.

Drinking tea while writing, or at least pondering the ideas for a future text, will help you become more attentive, detail-oriented and, not to mention, it will help you get rid of the writer’s block. How come? Well, tea boosts your long-term attentional processing. This means that you will come up with more good ideas in shorter periods of time since your brain is stimulated by caffeine and theanine; ingredients found in green tea.

 Stop Being A Perfectionist

One of the common causes of writer’s block is perfectionism. You feel like everything needs to be just right, whether it is on a piece of paper or in a Word document. You try over and over to come up with something spectacular until you start comparing yourself to other writers and ‘realize’ that you are a complete writer’s failure. Well, guess what? This will not help you get rid of the writer’s block, but rather, it will create a whole army of writer’s blocks.

Instead, what you should do is simply freefall into your mind. Start writing whatever pops into that head of yours and rely on the stream of consciousness, for starters. Don’t force some Shakespearian sentences out of nowhere, and don’t think about the people who are going to read them. You should isolate your thoughts and just write, disregarding rules and conventions, until you have reached that one idea you are utterly satisfied with. This way, you can also be sure that everything you have written is authentic and uniquely you, since you have entered the unexplored parts of your mind.

Work In The Morning

In one of my favorite The Mission Podcasts articles, the author of the article made a list of the daily routine of 20 most famous writers. And, you can guess it; the majority of them worked in the morning. The reason for that is that your brain is least tired in the morning and gets more tired towards noon. There is also a small possibility of experiencing writer’s block if you start writing early in the morning since your mind is at its sharpest between 7 am and 11:30 am. Writers like WH Auden, Ernest Hemingway, and Maya Angelou, were all dismissive of night owls and believed that a writer is only a writer in the morning since he or she has to live the rest of the day as a regular human.

Read And Research

To many, it may sound redundant to read and research when trying to overcome a writer’s block and come up with your ideas, but, it is the complete opposite. Without reading, any writer, even the most talented one, will remain mediocre and won’t grow as a writer, since there is no place for creativity without books. By reading other people’s work, thoughts and ideas, there is a good chance you will get inspiration for your own original and creative ideas too.

Since creativity comes in waves, and writer’s block is often around the corner, it is essential to bear in mind that there is always room for improvement, but also regression. But, if we, writers all decided to embrace writer’s block as a part of the process in which we come up with excellent writings, maybe then writer’s block will lose its meaning and only become a source of motivation.
