Careers around the world are changing.

With more and more people breaking away from the traditional 9 to 5 jobs, many from Gen Z are left wondering about their future career paths. While freelance work can pay the bills, there is still a need for practical jobs.

If you are wondering what your future career should be, explore these outside-of-the-box options most people never think about.

Stress Management Jobs

One of the downsides to freelance work is the extra effort you need to put into marketing yourself and managing contacts. This can add a LOT of extra stress to being your own boss. Tackling work-related pressure can also be very difficult without the proper tools and services.

Stress in the workplace has also gone up significantly since 2012. In Australia for instance, three in five people work more hours than they are paid for, which adds strain on the body and mind.

On the other side of the world, the United States is facing a job crisis, with not enough traditional jobs to go around. Both of these factors cause different kinds of stress and different kinds of job opportunities.

Some successful careers involve trying to make employees and freelancers less stressed in the workplace. This can involve teaching others how to tackle work-related pressures, handling stress-related human resources tasks, therapy, or your own unique methods.

For example: the need for natural stress relief in the workplace has risen and aromatherapy may help. You don’t necessarily have to be an aromatherapy salesperson, but you could work for consulting companies on how to use aromatherapy to relieve stress in the workplace.

Appraisers as a Gen Z Career

Many people start their freelancing careers by selling things online. This teaches them the basics of modern business through hands-on learning and helps them earn a little extra money on the side.

The problem is that many people choose to go a bit further, cleaning out their baseball card collection or selling old records. If the person doesn’t have experience in the industry, they risk selling their prized possessions for next to nothing.

An appraiser works within a specific industry and helps people determine the financial value of their belongings. They know their field inside and out, making them able to spot real value in minutes.

Some from Gen Z can work to broaden their skills, much like an antique appraiser would using the power of the Internet. People who are good at research can consult individuals, develop business plans for companies, or open up their own store.

You could even go the opposite route, collecting items and then opening a museum!

Civil Engineering and Related Practices

Civil engineers are a great example, as they help create the buildings we work and live in. As more people need space to do their own thing, there is a greater need for apartment complexes, affordable offices, and warehouses.

If you would like to take it a step further, try looking for a job as a city planner. Their job is to help organize streets, schedule construction, and handle many of the complex planning that comes with progress.

If you would rather focus on people but still maintain a passion for creating something, interior design could be for you.

Many individuals hire interior designers to help them develop practical spaces to live and work in. Some interior designers even specialize in working with large companies; helping them create hundreds of beautiful rooms.

If you are looking for a combination of interior design and building, try a career as a green home re-modeler or a landscaping architect.

Become an Industry Leader

Most people don’t think “flipping burgers” all their life is a practical job, but they couldn’t be more wrong.

While it’s true that you shouldn’t strive to stay in an entry level position all your life, that doesn’t mean you can’t climb up the ladder. Taking on leadership positions early on can help prepare you for a corporate-level career, especially as many companies promote from within.

Steer your education towards the industry you are most interested in.

Getting a bachelor’s degree in customer service, service management, or hospitality, can actually help your career. This also opens up the door for more specialized positions.

For example: a degree in hospitality could help you get a job as a theme park manager. Sometimes, moving up in your “starter” job is the most practical career choice.

If you are a proven leader in your field, you can also work towards teaching unique skills to others. Leadership at work is difficult to learn and many people need private consultations. You could teach through workshops by showing people more effective ways to manage their companies.

There will be a wide variety of in-demand careers for Gen Z in the future. Even if you don’t decide to do freelance work, you can still find a unique job doing what you love. Sometimes, the most unique jobs are the most practical ones.
