An e-store is a great way for someone who’s always been interested in running their own business. You don’t need to worry about finding a location and paying rent. Plus, you can work from home if you want!

Most people who start businesses, especially ones involving products, hope to grow and expand. But more important than expansion is the right start. Here are a few tips to get your e-store up and running.

How to start your own e-store

1.) Have a business plan.

Even if you think your business is too small to have one, have one anyway. Business plans help cement your goals and give you an idea of what you need to do to get where you want go, business-wise.

It doesn’t have to be the most involved, intricate, document ever. Just put together a basic outline of what you’re offering, who you think will enjoy your wares, and what your financials look like.

2.) Put a lot of thought into what you’re selling.

Do you want to sell a variety of one thing? Or do you want to sell a variety of things that fall under one umbrella? In a world of craft beers, honeys, pastas, etc., you can choose to sell one product in a million ways.

On the other hand, let’s say you wanted to sell items for children. Then you’d have a whole bunch of different things to display and sell that would be categorized together. Either way can work as long as you’re selling high quality products.

There are already plenty of stores (on- or offline) that specialize in passing off cheap junk to their customers. So put some thought and effort into what you’re putting out there. People do respond to quality, and they will pay for it if it’s worth the money.

3.) Consider platform software.

There are great websites where you can sell stuff so you won’t need to put up your own site just yet. That can be a good place to start if you want to test the waters and see how you like running your own e-store.

It can also be a good place to see how people react to your products. This allows you to gauge what you need to expand. If you think you’re ready for your own site, then check out the cloud ecommerce platforms currently available.

Ecommerce platforms are software that helps unify your business and keeps track of what is being sold. They have a range of inexpensive (none of them are cheap, so to speak) and premium services. So if you think this is a good move for you, then do some homework and see which one fits best.

4.) Advertise without spending all your cash.

Social media is the entrepreneur’s best friend. It can be a great and cheap way to advertise, so you don’t go broke just trying to get people’s eyeballs on your products. Just make sure you don’t jump right into offering deals – unless you’re doing cross promotion with another business.

Too many small businesses offer deals and discounts right away without retaining any of the customers that take advantage of the offers. Let your product speak for itself first. Once you’ve got everything lined up, you can get your dream off the ground. Running and operating your own e-store can be challenging, but it can also be rewarding.

If you make smart moves, offer high quality products, and deliver great customer service, you’ve got a shot at an enterprise you can grow. You can also choose to keep it small.

It’s your e-store – run it how you want!
