Okay, look, I get it.

Games like D&D come with a litany of stereotypes and assumptions.

These games are associated with people who only sometimes fit in with the popular crowd, dare I say, nerds.

However, I have witnessed the power of D&D and what it can do for young people.

I have taught middle and high school for over fifteen years.

During that time, I have encountered every archetype of a student you can imagine.

A student who was passionate about Dungeons & Dragons decided to start a D&D after-school club.

He asked to use my classroom to host the game.

I said sure.

In one week, he had five people.

By week 3, he had 10.

Before the month was over, 20 people were staying after school to play D&D.

It was remarkable to see a student organizing his peers for constructive activities.

It was amazing to witness how all of these teenagers played the game with integrity and thoroughly enjoyed competing and encouraging one another.

I was impressed with how the older high schoolers looked out for the younger high schoolers, which rarely happens in secondary education.

D&D provided a platform for students to engage one another in a safe space while they channeled their creativity and built stronger bonds.
