He was born in Monroe, Washington, in 1940 and died in Oceanside, New York, in 2021 at the age of 81.

In 1988 Close became paralyzed and had to adapt his painting style as a result, but he continued his successful artistic career.
Close was married and divorced twice and had two daughters with his first wife, Leslie Rose.
