7 Epic Experiences to Get You Out of Your Comfort Zone
First, let’s address the obvious question.
Why is it important to get out of your comfort zone?
The answer is a simple one (at least on paper).
You cannot grow as a person if you aren’t willing to do things that force you to step outside of your safe places.
When you cannot grow, you become stagnant, and that impacts your ability to move forward in your personal life, on the job, or spiritually.
The next question is; what can you do to really push your boundaries?
The truth is, everybody has their own emotionally safe places, so there is no universal list of things you can do.
However, we have come up with a list of 7 epic experiences that are varied enough that almost everybody should be able to find at least one that applies to them.
7 Epic Experiences to Get You Out of Your Comfort Zone
1. Audition For a Part in a Community Theater Production
Performing in front of an audience in any capacity is something that takes almost everybody far out of their comfort zone quite quickly.
It may be a harrowing experience and you might not get the part, but you will definitely learn something.
Even better, you’ll get to meet some great people who are passionate about their craft.
In fact, if you don’t get the part, you should consider putting yourself out there a bit more and volunteer to work backstage.
2. Travel Abroad by Yourself
Here is the problem with traveling abroad with other people.
Everybody in the group tends to pick the safest, most touristy things to do.
This is because keeping everybody happy means doing what the least adventurous person wants to do.
In addition to this, traveling with others gives you the opportunity to socialize and interact with the people who have come along with you.
If you travel alone, all of this changes.
You can be as adventurous as you want to be, because you don’t have to cater to another person’s unwillingness to try new things.
Then, if you want to socialize, you’re going to have to spend time with the natives, or make friends with other tourists.
3. Go Scuba Diving or Jump Out of a Plane
Doing things that are physically adventurous are a wonderful way to push the boundaries of your comfort zone.
You may be scared out of your mind when you begin, but the endorphins and the adrenaline will give you one heck of a rush.
This may be an extreme suggestion, but it will definitely help you to get you of your comfort zone.
When you are finished, you may never want to try that activity again, but you’ll always have a great story to tell.
4. Take a Class on Something You Know Absolutely Nothing About
Is there something that you’ve always wanted to learn?
Maybe you want to know how to fix your own car.
Maybe you want to learn oil painting, or how to speak another language.
If so, what’s been holding you back?
Are you afraid you’ll make mistakes and be embarrassed?
Good news!
You will make mistakes and be embarrassed.
That’s fine.
You’ll also learn something new, and have one more accomplishment to add to your list.
5. Sign up to Play a Team Sport on a Recreational League
If you tend to stick with your inner circle of friends and acquaintances, joining a sports team is a great way to get out of your comfort zone.
You’ll learn to work as a team with a new group of people, engage in some physical activity, and do something that you’ve never done or haven’t done in years.
Even if you’re an absolute klutz, you’ll have a good time.
6. Volunteer at a Food Pantry
Have you ever thought that you would like to be more active in your community and help those who are less fortunate?
If you have, but felt really uncomfortable making that call to volunteer, you are not alone.
Many people want to volunteer, but have difficulty stepping outside of their comfort zone and actually doing it.
However, if you bite the bullet and make yourself show up to help out, you’ll be very glad you did.
7. Write a Letter to The Editor
Do you have strong opinions?
Why don’t you share them?
Is it because the idea of putting your name out there along with your thoughts is intimidating?
Well, maybe it’s time to get past that, and stand up and be counted.
Human beings are facing a variety of tough issues, why not weigh in with your ideas and suggestions.
Hopefully at least one of these experiences will be the key to you expanding your comfort zone at least a bit.
If not, try to think of things you can do that will feel a bit scary at first, but will also be well worth the risks.
