Light a citronella candle and ready the calamine lotion because these mosquito quotes are sure to make you itch.

The mosquito is a tiny insect notorious for being over-the-top irritating.

The mosquito is among the most deadly creatures currently living on Earth.

It is found in diverse habitats around the globe.

Apart from this, mosquitoes also have a substantial impact on our ecosystems.

Keep reading to learn more.

Life Cycle and Anatomy

Mosquitoes come from a family called Culicidae.

There are more than 3,500 known species of mosquitoes.

Irrespective of their small size, these insects can adapt to various habitats.

The life cycle of this insect consists of four stages, including:

  1. Egg
  2. Larva
  3. Pupa
  4. Adult

Mosquitoes usually lay their eggs in standing water like ponds and puddles.

The larvae are commonly referred to as “wigglers.”

After hatching from eggs, larvae develop in water.

After some time, they enter the pupal stage and turn into adult mosquitoes.

Ecological Role

Mosquitoes are also known for their essential role while creating ecological balance.

These insects both serve as predators as well as prey.

This means mosquitoes dually benefit the ecosystem.

Contrary to a common belief, mosquitos don’t feed on blood.

Only the female mosquito needs blood for reproduction, which persuades her to bite humans and other animals with soft skin.

Most of the mosquitoes feed on nectar obtained from flowers.

Hence, they also contribute to pollination.

Regarding aquatic environments, mosquito larvae also serve as a critical food source for amphibians and fish.

Adult mosquitoes also serve as a significant food source for bats, birds, and other insectivores.

Health Challenges and Diseases

In addition to their ecological value, mosquitoes pose different health risks to humans.

Since female mosquitoes bite humans for blood, they can transmit different diseases like Malaria and Dengue.

For instance, Malaria is caused by the transmission of a parasite called Plasmodium.

It is transmitted by a particular mosquito species named “Anopheles mosquito.”

Malaria is so deadly that it is responsible for thousands of deaths per year worldwide.

Some other types of diseases transmitted by mosquitoes are listed below:

  • Zika virus
  • Yellow fever
  • West Nile virus
  • Chikungunya

“Do not use a cannon to kill a mosquito.” This quote has been attributed to the Chinese philosopher Confucius (551-478 BCE) who lived during the Tang Dynasty in ancient China. Although it is possible that Confucius would never have used the word ‘cannon’ because gunpowder was only invented about 1300 years after Confucius’ time, the message of the saying is what is important and still relevant. It means to not overthink a problem and to find the simplest answers to the questions and problems life throws at you. https://www.linkedin.com/pulse/do-use-cannon-kill-mosquito-lessons-simplicity-jeremiah-ph-d-/ Many additional sites also attribute this quote to Confucius.
