The bike has come a long way.

What is the origin of the bicycle?

Today people take bike rides on all sorts of bicycles.

People enjoy racing bikes, BMX bikes, mountain bikes, mini bikes, and motorized bikes.

However, today’s bikes look nothing like the first bikes created hundreds of years ago.

Bicycle history

There have been several predecessors to today’s modern bicycle.

Some historians trace modern-day bicycles back to the sixteenth century.

This speculation starts with Leonardo da Vinci and his sketches.

Some historians claim that Davinci or his student Gian Giacomo Caprotti made simple sketches for a bicycle.

Other scholars do not believe the sketches are authentic and accredit the first bicycle precursor to German inventor Baron Karl von Drais.

In the early eighteen hundreds, Drais invented the Laufmaschine, a t-shaped bar attached to two wheels.

The rider could not peddle but could coast and use their legs to push along.

Later, British inventors added to Drais’s invention by creating the Dandy Horse, the first commercially produced design.

Later, French engineers Pierre Michaux and Pierre Lallemen improved the Dandyhorse’s design by adding a seat, rubber tires, and ball bearings.

Eventually, John Kemp Starley created the first safety bicycle, which many regard as one of the essential creations in bicycle history.

His design added pedals and a chain connected to a steerable front wheel.

Modern-day bicycles

Bicycle design has become standardized in our modern time, but we cannot take for granted the hundreds of years it took to go from humble beginnings to one of the world’s most popular forms of transportation.

Ride a bike, save the world

Riding a bike is excellent for everyone and our world

Over fifty percent of the world’s population knows how to ride a bike.

In countries like China, Belgium, Japan, and Finland, many people use a bike as their primary transportation.

Bikes do much less damage to roads and keep infrastructure costs down.

Bikes also dramatically decrease the traffic produced in places with large populations.

Bikes cost significantly less than automobiles, and a bike is about 1% of the cost of buying and maintaining a car.

Riding bikes can revolutionize how we care for our planet.

Did you know that bicycling uses minimal fossil fuels and is a pollution-free mode of transport?

Bikes reduce the need to build, service, and dispose of cars, and they conserve our natural spaces.
