What is a Calendar?

A calendar tends to be a powerful tool that is used to help us organize our day-to-day lives.

In other words, it allows us to keep track of time.

With the help of a calendar, we can plan what we are going to do in the future.

The history of calendars dates back thousands of years.

However, its importance in the modern era can’t be undermined.

Origin

In order to keep track of time, old civilizations started to utilize a calendar system.

Calendars were seen in ancient civilizations like:

  • Egyptians
  • Mesopotamians
  • Mayans

These civilizations created a calendar system depending on astronomical observations.

Earlier calendars relied heavily on celestial movements like the moon, stars, and sun.

There are three major types of calendars in history:

  • Roman calendar
  • Julian calendar
  • Gregorian calendar

Roman Calendar

The calendars used in Rome were referred to as the ‘Roman calendar’.

It was based on a ten-month system.

The year for this calendar used to start in March and end in December.

Yet, it failed to align with the solar year, which led to discrepancies regarding time.

Julian Calendar

Julius Caesar launched a new calendar in 46 BCE, which was known as the Julian calendar.

This calendar consisted of 365 days, and there was a leap year after every four years.

An additional one day was added every four years to compensate for the leap years.

The Julian calendar was an improved version of the Roman calendar, yet there were slight inaccuracies.

Gregorian Calendar

Pope Gregory XIII introduced this calendar in 1582.

The Gregorian calendar was meant to overcome the discrepancies found in previous versions.

This calendar also made some tweaks to the leap year rule.

It excluded the years, which were divisible by 100.

Due to this modification, the calendar year was brought closer to the solar year.

It is the most commonly used calendar to date.

Why a Calendar is So Important

Calendars are crucial for our daily lives as a society.

A calendar offers a framework for organizing, planning, and keeping track of time.

We can perform various tasks by considering the available dates in the calendar.

These include:

  • Schedule appointments
  • Set deadlines
  • Manage professional or personal commitments

Calendars help us synchronize and coordinate our lives.

In addition to practicality, calendars also make it possible for us to anticipate and celebrate the key events in our lives.
