What is a spa?

There are many types of spas out there, but at its core, a spa is a place that offers therapeutic, beauty, and relaxation treatments.

The Global Wellness Institute notes that there are more than 149,000 spas worldwide.

Spas are places where people go to receive:

  • Massages
  • Hydrotherapy
  • Skin and body care

Spas are more than just a place to get a manicure.

There is a science behind relaxation and rejuvenation.

Many ancient civilizations were aware of this concept, so the idea of going to a spa is old.

Let’s learn more about the history of the spa.

Where does the word spa come from?

Spa is an interesting word with several potential origins.

The Greek philosopher Hippocrates, who lived over two thousand years ago, once said, “the way to health is to have an aromatic bath and scented massage every day.”

Some people trace the origin of the word spa to ancient Rome and Greece.

They believe the word is an acronym for the Latin phrase salus per aquam, which means health from water

Other historians trace the word’s origin to a village in Belgium known as Spa, where Roman soldiers used hot mineral springs to treat battle wounds.

This is not to suggest that spas or water therapy did not exist before its use in Rome or Greece.

Evidence of hot spring usage, steam baths, and other health and beauty techniques existed in the Americas, Africa, and Asia even earlier.

Today, the word spa is famous all over the world.

Writer Jo Foley notes, “Spa is an international word whose meaning is the same in any language.”

Why do people go to spas today?

In modern times, people go to spas for all sorts of reasons.

Spas are more than places where people get their hair and nails done.

Spas are a part of serious holistic healing

Many people receive a gift (or gift themselves) for a trip to the spa on their birthday!

Many medical professionals recommend spa treatments for cleansing both internal and external parts of ourselves.

Spas are also used for people recovering from injuries and those who are experiencing mental health episodes due to fatigue or burnout.

Everyone should take time to incorporate self-care into their routine.
