  • High-status people often attempt to play dumb to seem more approachable to others.

Why do people play dumb?

People play dumb for all sorts of reasons, usually to gain an advantage over someone else but also to protect the feelings of others or to avoid confrontation.

For example, a friend may ask, “Did you tell our coworker that I wanted to go on a date when they asked about me?

The other friend may respond, “No, I decided to play dumb about it because I did not want to get involved.”

People play dumb to protect the feelings of others all of the time, particularly when it comes to dating or romance.

What are the advantages of playing dumb?

There are many advantages to playing dumb, and playing dumb is not unique to human beings.

It might seem surprising to you, but animals also exhibit this behavior.

Monkeys are mammals that people study to understand human psychology better.

When scientists study rhesus monkeys, they find that monkeys choose to play dumb.

When scientists hid peanuts and bananas for the monkeys to find, they observed that socially dominant and nondominant monkeys were able to solve the puzzle of where the food was located.

However, they also observed that when in the presence of dominant monkeys, the nondominant monkeys would not exhibit their ability to solve the puzzle and find the hidden food.

Instead, the nondominant monkeys would play dumb until the dominant monkeys were out of sight.

If the dominant monkeys were present, they would take the food.

However, if the nondominant monkeys pretended not to know where the food was, they could secretly access the food on their own.

Humans are similar in this way.

We use the concept of playing dumb to our advantage.

What are the negatives of playing dumb?

Some people advise others to play dumb as a power play strategy.

They might say if you want to extract information from another, play dumb so the other person will feel superior and flaunt their superiority by telling more than they usually would.

This strategy is advantageous sometimes, but it also comes with disadvantages.

The problem with chronically feigning ignorance is that people will perceive us as ignorant when we do it too often.

There is a difference between encouraging others to perceive us as dumb and choosing to be a lifetime learner.

Lifetime learners are naturally curious, ask questions, and want to know more.

You do not need to hide your intelligence to be a lifelong learner.

You can still allow others to teach and share things without having to come across as dumb to receive new information.
